Icy Crucible

Icy Crucible
I entered this shot of ice refreezing on my lake last month to a JPG Magazine (or now I guess it's JPG website) photo challenge on "Frozen." I didn't win. The winning entries are here. I think maybe the focus is a bit soft in parts of my image, and it doesn't provide any scale or even any explanation of what exactly the image is. You can only enter one image per challenge or I'd have run "Klee Ice I" as well. Oh, well, you can't win 'em all.

I don't know, I think this (yours) have more depth than the frozen window one. I think the entire series would look killer hung together, matted with a nubby black material and a brushed silver colored frame.

Cool abstract.

You got robbed!
The series in the winner's column was nice but agree with Donna. The window one was a bit predictable and weak by comparison.

Really enjoy this series, ahab. I'd like to see them all together, too.

Thanks, everybody! I feel like a big winner!

I like my shot too but it's borderline, at best, as far as the contest goes. Another problem is that I don't have any photos on JPG other than this one and an alternate take. As Mary said, they aren't going to award an interloper. But it was fun to enter and then to link to the contest in any case.

I've gotten some more cool ice shots each of the last three days. Good thing for posterity, too, because now it's snowing outside and erasing all that great frozen art.

I've been contributing pictures to the JPG Magazine website for a couple years now, but have yet to discover the secret to getting more than just a few views. It's somewhat discouraging to see certain pictures that are average at best getting tons of views, comments and favorites, while others languish.

Like the one you posted here, for instance. Hell of a nice shot.

I was hoping you'd give us some JPG tricks, G, as you're the one who turned me on to the site. But I guess the first trick is obvious -- upload more than two shots!

Does Flickr do contests (or challenges) like that? It should, they're fun.

I don't know about contests per se on Flickr, at least not like JPG has them. As for that site, I think part of getting a lot of views is just to view a lot of other peoples' pictures, make a lot of contacts and leave a lot of comments. Oh, and post good pictures, too, but I think you've already got that part covered.
