Before Our Bubble Burst

Before Our Bubble Burst

I have taken waaaaaaay too many pictures in too many venues over the past 48 hours -- cashing in the rain check from the past couple months, I suppose -- and it's going to take me a fair amount of time to get through all of them. But in the meantime, here's one that struck me right off the top.

Better bigger.

City Impressions

City Impressions

It rained here last Saturday. It really, really rained. Here's what it looked like down on Mission Street as I was sitting in my car hoping it would let up long enough for me to carry some photos from the car to the Mission Cultural Center.

Art Deco Abstract

Deco Ceiling

I spent Saturday morning on a tour of the Paramount Theater in Oakland, an art deco palace designed by Timothy Pflueger and opened in 1931. It has been restored to its original splendor, and is a must-see for all fans of that style of architecture. You're allowed to take all the pictures you want while on the tour, which is heaven for an inveterate shutterbug like me. This is just a small sample of the intricate ceiling structure designed by Pflueger -- who also designed the Castro Theater and a number of other opulent movie palaces and office buildings in those heady days before and during the Great Depression.

The Paramount offers tours the first and third Saturdays of each month, at a very reasonable cost of $5 per person. Highly recommended to fans of art deco architecture and movie theater history.

Klee Ice II

Klee Ice II
This is a leftover from last year at this time, but I'm clearing the decks in hope of a similar opportunity in the next few days. "Klee Ice I" is here.

Through a Glass Darkly

Through a Glass Darkly

Hey, I was on vacation all last week. Guess what I did. This was taken a few drinks into my high school reunion.
