On the Beach

On the Beach

Seriously, doesn't this look like it could be what's left after the nuclear holocaust? Or just a normal day at the Salton Sea Beach Marina. Same difference.

Justin's Skate Park, Slab City, CA

Justin and His Skate Park

I'm home for a brief respite between legs 1 and 2 of the sabbatical (I fly out of SFO Friday morning). So far, it's been a blast. I have lots of stories to tell and hundreds of photos to work through and process. Later.

This is Justin, a resident of Slab City, near the small town of Niland and the Salton Sea. He's built a skate park there, "for everyone." Including the Salvation Mountain site, Slab City is an amazing spot that not many people get to see up close.

BTW -- great stuff you guys have been posting in my absence! I looked a few times while on the road, and thought, man, I'd sure like to share a blog with those guys!

Travel Thursday: Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree

We got lucky the day we went to Joshua Tree National Monument with our friends Mike and Kris; it was an unseasonably cool 80° out there. Just a few days earlier, it had been 111° in nearby Palm Springs. I just wish we'd had more time to spend there, and that the bees weren't so prevalent nearly everywhere we went.

Sofa by the Side of the Road

Sofa Free, Hitching North

I get very excited whenever I see an abandoned couch; I just have to stop and take a few minutes to shoot it. When I was in SoCal last week, I got my good friend Mike so well-trained that he would immediately stop (or even make a U-turn if necessary) whenever he saw one on the side of the road so I could capture it. This shot in particular, taken in Desert Hot Springs after a long day Jeeping through Joshua Tree, is immensely appealing to me.
