Travel Thursday: Stinson Beach

Beachcombing

Stinson Beach is a huge, popular stretch of coastline with a cute little town just west of Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. In the summer, it's jammed, and the line of cars trying to get there stretches for miles and miles back to 101. On a beautiful November Sunday, though, it was easy to get to and not crowded at all.

It's great when it's this deserted. Other times, I'm reminded of a throwaway line from Jon Carroll: "When it gets hot in the Bay Area, everybody goes to the beach. Stinson Beach." Last time I was there was for a hike on Tam--got there before 8 am and left around 1 pm, and sailed past a line of stopped inbound traffic at least a couple miles long.

(Sorry I stepped on your post--I think we were both drafting ours at the same time.)

gorgeous! (but you all probably know I'm a sucker for beaches) Rivulets might be my favorite.

Not a problem, Tom. I thought it was kind of amusing that we both hit "Post" within a couple minutes of each other. And yes, off-season is definitely the time to visit Stinson (or, as you did, really, really early in the day). As Yogi Berra allegedly said, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."

Donna, glad you liked these. I was pretty happy with them myself!

Playing with the 10mm zoom, eh? Nice.

Actually, I shot all these with just the standard 18-55mm lens. Sometimes that's enough, it seems.

(And don't get me started on lenses I want to buy soon...)
