Martini Monday

Cosmopolitan 02
Actually a Cosmopolitan this week--a much maligned drink, but pretty darn good if you make it right:
  • 1 part fresh lime juice
  • 2 parts unsweetened cranberry juice
  • 2 parts triple sec
  • 4 parts vodka

I have nothing against a good Cosmopolitan except that I can't drink enough of them in one sitting to really make a difference (because they're just too sweet after a while). Two is about 2/3 more than I ever want.

My friend John Caine, bartender and part-owner of the Hi-Dive on the Embarcadero, claims to have invented them when he worked at Julie's Supper Club in the '80s. I've never known whether he was bullshitting me about that or not.

It's not a marathon drink for me, but I do like to have a couple every now and then.

Wikipedia does credit Caine as one of the likely originators.

Substitute tequila for the vodka and you'd be pretty close to our "house" cocktail, the Pudgy Mewler.

At least I think that's how Mary makes them.

No, it's tequila, pomegranate, Gran Marnier, lime. It's an adaptation of a Rude Cosmopolitan. Named after the cat.

I could actually go for one...

I'm also wrong about the "house" cocktail's name, which is the Pudgy McGriffin. I'm not sure where that comes from. Probably the tequila.

I like it with pomegranate juice too. I get to feel (kid myself) all healthy then.

I'm an extreme light lightweight -- one martini or 1,5 cosmos and I'm history. OK, I'm really just too mellow to have more but not so mellow that I can't walk home.
