Very much enjoying Tom's Santa series, but I didn't want to be absent all week. Here's a nice piece of neon that I caught in San Jose the day after Thanksgiving. An artist in the UK contacted me about using this image as the basis for a drawing or painting he wants to create; will keep you all apprised if that comes to fruition.

That is a great shot. Really looking forward to seeing how it comes out as a painting.
Boy, I don't know what a painter can do to improve on this beautiful capture. The proportions are great, as is the color play. The golds hold it together in a really interesting way.
And it's just the perfect time of evening, isn't it, for this subject? What kind of souless bastard wouldn't want to go in there, Donna?
A bit more light or interest under that awning and this is a masterpiece. Maybe that's what your painter has in mind. He's not called Hopper, is he?
Wow, thanks for your comments, folks. And I totally agree with you, ahab, that the under-awning space could stand a little more light.
Maybe I'll work on that...
My monitor at home is much brighter than the one at work, so sometimes I'll do a shot that looks perfect here and then get to work and see it and it looks murky. This one is like that: when I was looking at work I agreed with ahab, but on the home monitor there's a nice level of detail visible under the awning.
And I have to assume that other people's monitors are set all over the map, so there's really no way to optimize for everybody...
I recently upgraded to a much bigger monitor, then I discovered it's not of very high quality. I think Santa may be bringing me a better large monitor. If I can just be good for a couple of more weeks...
As for G's photo, I was just trying to consider what a painter might do with it. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with. We photographers shoot the scene we have, right?-- not the scene we might wish to have.
