Travel Thursday: Pescadero

Pescadero Garden

Less than an hour's drive down Highway 1 from San Francisco, Pescadero is a sleepy little farm town with some beautiful gardens, old homes and interesting artwork. Duarte's Tavern is over 100 years old, and serves the best cream of artichoke and cream of green chile soups anywhere; plus olallieberry pie to die for. The nearby state beach was recently in the news because PETA offered to pay to keep it open despite the current California budget cuts that will close down many state parks -- if only it would change its name to Sea Kitten State Park.

I am not making that up.

I heard that Jayne Mansfield's heirs offered a bunch of money to rename it "Sex Kitten State Beach".

Seriously, though...that PETA stunt just makes me wonder how kittens taste filleted and deep-fried.

Great set of pics.

Sex Kitten State Park. HA!!!

I'm not entirely unsympathetic to PETA's raison d'etre, but it's stunts like that that make me roll my eyes and shake my head and vow to never, ever give them any of my time or money. They do more to undermine their own causes than anyone opposed to them could ever hope to do.

It's a great little town. I loved it when I visited a couple of years ago. And Duarte tavern, well...that's my family name!

Love the skeleton! That would be brilliant in my front yard. And I think Baby Sea Kitten State Park would be even better...
The first shot made me think of Italy.
