Phainopepla

Phainopepla
In Southern Arizona last winter. Red-eyed, he's kind of a reverse-colored Northern Cardinal.

Thanks. Most desert birds are discreet, but not these guys. Very bold. They suit their (very cool) name. That's a mountain in the background, btw, not sky.

Yes, he looks like a killer. But they're very mild and nosy, actually. (You do have to wonder about that dusky coat choice for desert attire.)
